Trade unions

The Indonesian forestry workers union has put out an urgent appeal for funds for Aceh and North Sumatra. Money donated will go directly to the union in one of the worst-affected areas. Donations can be made via Labour Start

TUC Aid will allocate all donations between the charities working with victims and the ICFTU and Global Unions Federations, who will use funds for long-term rehabilitation of victims and their families and for repairs to union buildings and purchase of equipment for union offices affected by the disaster. The official Australian trade union movement solidarity arm, Union Aid Abroad, says that donations will go to local community organisations and trade unions in northern Sri Lanka, southern Sri Lanka and Aceh. Donations via Union Aid Abroad

Political parties

The Sri Lankan section of the Fourth International – as part of the left alliance ‘New Left Front’ – is helping to rehabilitate the poor fishermen and the craftsmen in the coastal belt and demands disaster management is to be implemented through people’s participation. They organise aid and medical supplies. More details under New Left Front

The Socialist Party reports that members of its Sri Lankan section, the United Socialist Party, are missing including comrade Piyatilake, a member of the USP’s central committee. Pro-democracy organisations

The Jakarta based Civil Society Coalition for the Victims of Earthquake and Tsunami (Koalisi Masyarakat Sipil untuk Korban Gempa dan Tsunami) is organising assistance. This organisation includes activists from the Solidarity with the Acehnese People’s Movement and the Women’s Organization for Democracy in Aceh. Donate via Green Left Site

The US-based East Timor Action Network will sent donations directly to Acehnese groups whose usual work is with displaced persons and children, bypassing the politics and constraints that challenge governments and international organisations. Women’s Organisations

The human rights group Inform, based in Sri Lanka, supports women’s networks on women-specific issues. Donations via MADRE
