19 November 2015 marks the centenary of the murder of Joe Hill \u2013 Swedish-born American labour activist and organiser, songwriter and member of the Wobblies\u2019 (the Industrial Workers of the World).\u00a0His most famous songs include \u2018The Preacher and the Slave\u2019 (containing the new phrase \u2018pie in the sky\u2019), \u2018The Tramp\u2019, \u2018There is Power in the Union\u2019 \u2018The Rebel Girl\u2019 and \u2018Casey Jones \u2013 the Union Scab\u2019.<\/p>\n

Hill was convicted of murder in a highly controversial trial. Following an unsuccessful appeal, and despite political debates and international calls for clemency from high-profile figures and workers\u2019 organisations, he was executed in Salt Lake City on 19 November 1915.<\/p>\n

After his death, he was memorialised by several folk songs, including \u2018I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night\u2019\u00a0by Alfred Hayes. His life and death have also inspired a plethora of poems and books.
