It is the latest in a series highlighting Cymru&#8217;s dissatisfaction with the Union and the possibilities this opens up.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8216;YES CYMRU&#8217; BUOYED BY NEW REPORT THAT SAYS INDEPENDENCE IS &#8220;VIABLE&#8221; &#8211; IS INDEPENDENCE A STEP CLOSER?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/republicancommunist.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Unknown-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-29054\" src=\"http:\/\/republicancommunist.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Unknown-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"547\" height=\"364\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campaign group YesCymru has welcomed a landmark report into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/topics\/wales\/\">Wales\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0constitutional future as a \u201csignificant step in the journey\u201d to Welsh independence. The report by an independent commission has found that independence is a \u201cviable\u201d option, while calling devolution \u201cflawed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Welsh independence a \u201cviable\u201d but \u201cuncertain\u201d option<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pro-independence group YesCymru was responding to the findings of the Independent Commission on the Constitutional Future of Wales, co-chaired by professor Laura McAllister and Dr Rowan Williams. It\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.wales\/independent-commission-constitutional-future-wales\">published its report<\/a>\u00a0on 17 January. The Welsh government set it up to look at the constitutional issues surrounding Wales \u2013 including independence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As\u00a0<em>Sky News<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/welsh-independence-viable-but-most-uncertain-option-for-waless-future-report-finds-13050418\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>the commission focused on three options \u2013 increased devolution, a federal UK and an independent Wales.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Its report concluded that all three of those options were \u201cviable\u201d but that Welsh independence was \u201cby far the most uncertain option\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The report outlined risks in terms of currency, borders, trade, cost and capacity and warned they were \u201cgreater post-Brexit\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, as well as saying in its report that independence is a \u201cviable\u201d option, the commission added that it creates the potential for long term positive change, and would grant the power to \u201cdevise policies which reflect the priorities of the people of Wales\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also outlined the \u201crisk\u201d to Welsh democracy unless \u201curgent\u201d changes are made and called for the Senedd to have powers over justice, policing and rail infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It pointed to the \u201cfundamental flaw in the current system of devolution\u201d, saying that it \u201crests on powers conferred by the Westminster Parliament\u201d and that they \u201ccan be taken away by the Westminster Parliament at any time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, YesCymru was naturally buoyed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A \u201csignificant step\u201d to independence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A spokesperson said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>YesCymru welcomes the report by the Independent Commission on the Constitutional Future of Wales.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>As an organisation, we see it as a significant step in the journey to becoming an independent nation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Though the report does not go as far as we would like, it does make it clear that the status quo is completely untenable, and that rolling back the powers of the Senedd would not be in the best interest of the people of Wales.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>It confirmed that Wales is currently trapped in a UK economy that does not deliver prosperity to Welsh communities and is instead shaped in the interests of the South East of England and the City of London.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Importantly, the Commission also put independence firmly on the table as a viable and realistic option worth seriously considering.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Time to break free from Westminster?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spokesperson added that:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>YesCymru agrees with the Commission that under the current constitutional set-up, in which the Westminster Parliament has supremacy, Wales is completely reliant on the UK Government to grant the Senedd more powers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>It also gives Westminster politicians the power to ignore repeated calls by our political leaders in Wales for more powers as well as ignore the settled will of the Welsh people, as they have done for many years.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>It\u2019s perfectly clear that the UK is not an equal partnership of nations as Westminster politicians often like to claim.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The only guaranteed way of ensuring that Wales has control of its own destiny is to break free from Westminster and become independent.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>With full control of our money, our laws and our natural resources we will be able the secure a bright and prosperous future for our communities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>We have all of the talent and ability we need, but for our full potential to be realised we need to demonstrate the ambition, confidence and bravery to forge our own path as a fully sovereign country.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;
