ANNOUNCING THE 2023 DECLARATION OF CALTON HILL<\/strong><\/p>\n

On September 18th<\/sup>, November 2014, something truly remarkable in politics happened.\u00a0 By the time of the Scottish independence referendum, held on that day, 97% of Scotland\u2019s potential electorate had registered to vote and 85% took part.\u00a0 This level of democracy is something unprecedented anywhere in the UK\u2019s history.\u00a0 This was a Democratic Revolution.<\/p>\n

If \u2018IndyRef1\u2019 had been left in the hands of the SNP leaders, the final 45% \u2018Yes\u2019 vote would have been considerably smaller.\u00a0 However, many organisations were created, during the two-year period of heady democratic political discussion and debate.\u00a0 In the process, a Rainbow Alliance of women, people from LBGT+, BME and migrant backgrounds, local community activists and artists was developed.\u00a0 The Radical Independence Campaign (RIC), Women for Independence, Africans for an Independent Scotland, English People for Independence, Scots Asians for Independence and the National Collective (Imagine a Better Scotland), were just some of these.<\/p>\n

Meetings were held across Scotland in community and social centres, town and village halls. \u00a0These brought back many into active politics after a long absence and for others this was the very first time they participated. \u00a0Vibrant online campaigning undermined \u2018Project Fear\u2019s misinformation.\u00a0 A new pro-independence media was created e,g. The National<\/em> and bella caledonia<\/em> (self determination, autonomy, independence).\u00a0 The National Collective organised well attended \u2018Yestival\u2019 events throughout Scotland with many artists performing. \u00a0In a demonstration of \u2018internationalism from below\u2019 solidarity rallies and meetings were held in England, Wales and Ireland.<\/p>\n

IndyRef1 brought about the mainstreaming of Scottish independence as a political issue. \u00a0We still live with its consequences today.\u00a0 Conservatives and reactionaries want to overthrow its legacy.\u00a0 Unionists have moved ever further Right. \u00a0\u2018Better Together\u2019 gave way to \u2018Bitter Together.\u2019. And now the UK state\u2019s Supreme Court has ruled that there is no constitutional road to Scottish independence. \u00a0The Union will be maintained by any means necessary under the UK\u2019s s anti-democratic Crown Powers.\u00a0 Many liberals have become paralysed as their \u2018Devolution-all-round\u2019 UK has given way to a toxic \u2018Brexit Britain\u2019.\u00a0 None of the contending SNP leaders or Alba have a viable strategy to bring about independence in the face of this.<\/p>\n

On May 6th<\/sup>, the UK state-orchestrated coronation of Charles takes place in London. \u00a0Charles represents the pinnacle of the UK\u2019s political order, based on the sovereignty of the Crown-in-Westminster.\u00a0 Our Republic is organising a protest on Edinburgh\u2019s Calton Hill, a place with a long tradition of democratic dissent.\u00a0 The 2023 Declaration of Calton Hill, initiated by RIC, has been drawn up to win support for the assertion of the republican, democratic sovereignty of the Scottish people.\u00a0Its initial signatories are drawn from the worlds of Scottish politics, grassroots campaigning and from Scotland\u2019s vibrant cultural scene.\u00a0 Your signature can be given online.at www.caltonhill.scot<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The aim is to bring together once more that Rainbow Alliance which achieved so much in 2014. \u00a0We have no constitutional means to achieve Scottish independence.\u00a0 Our protest om May 6th<\/sup> anticipates the withdrawal of participation in the UK state\u2019s directly imposed institutions and extra-constitutional, non-violent, direct action until we complete Scotland\u2019s Democratic Revolution.<\/p>\n
