The following article, written by Martin Williams, was first posted by<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendemocracy.net\/en\/dark-money-investigations\/usmanov-circumvented-sanctions-for-russian-oligarchs-over-london-mansion\/\">openDemocracy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>REVEALED: RUSSIAN OLIGARCH DODGED SANCTIONS OVER MAYFAIR MANSION<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23059\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23059\" style=\"width: 477px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/republicancommunist.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Alisher-Usmanovjpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-23059\" src=\"http:\/\/republicancommunist.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Alisher-Usmanovjpg-300x185.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"477\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"http:\/\/republicancommunist.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Alisher-Usmanovjpg-300x185.jpg 300w, http:\/\/republicancommunist.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Alisher-Usmanovjpg-1024x631.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/republicancommunist.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Alisher-Usmanovjpg-768x473.jpg 768w, http:\/\/republicancommunist.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Alisher-Usmanovjpg-800x493.jpg 800w, http:\/\/republicancommunist.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Alisher-Usmanovjpg.jpg 1520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alisher Usmanov was placed under sanctions by the UK in March<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shares controlled by Alisher Usmanov in a London property firm were transferred to the Russian business empire he founded<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The government has promised Vladimir Putin\u2019s cronies total privacy if they launch a legal bid to be removed from the UK\u2019s sanctions list.<\/li>\n<li>The Foreign Office said it would be a \u201cbreach of confidence\u201d to name the Russians trying to have their sanctions overturned or the law firms representing them.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>But openDemocracy can reveal that one such individual is Alisher Usmanov, the billionaire former Everton Football Club investor, who was sanctioned last year when the British government accused him of having \u201cclose links to the Kremlin\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>A spokesperson for Usmanov, who made his fortune through a Russian mining company, has confirmed he has deployed legal teams to try to reverse the move.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>\u201cMr Usmanov and his relatives have already started to challenge the sanctions imposed on them, which they justifiably consider unfair and unsubstantiated,\u201d the spokesman said. \u201cAll legal means are currently being implemented to achieve this.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>Dozens of others accused of having links to Putin may also be fighting to remove sanctions but the government has pledged to protect their privacy, saying it is \u201cpersonal information\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>Responding to a Freedom of Information request from openDemocracy, the Foreign Office refused to say which Russian individuals had submitted legal applications to be removed from the sanctions list, which was expanded in the wake of Putin\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>Officials also refused to reveal whether any of those fighting sanctions are being assisted in their legal battles by law firms based in the UK.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>In contrast, appeals against EU sanctions are recorded publicly. <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/world\/155119\">Reports<\/a> say that multiple sanctioned Russians have employed legal teams to fight against the imposition of international sanctions.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>They include Usmanov, who<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/sep\/16\/alisher-usmanov-removed-eu-sanctions-list-saodat-narzieva\">filed an appeal last year<\/a>\u00a0to remove EU sanctions, which prevent him from accessing assets in member states or travelling across the continent. His bid has so far not been successful.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>But his sister, Saodat Narzieva,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/sep\/16\/alisher-usmanov-removed-eu-sanctions-list-saodat-narzieva\">managed to get her EU sanctions overturned<\/a> in September. At the time, a spokesperson said they \u201cexpect that the information we provided will be taken into account by the UK regulatory authorities in the decision to lift UK sanctions against Ms Narzieva.\u201d Saodat remains sanctioned in the UK.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>In June, openDemocracy also<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendemocracy.net\/en\/dark-money-investigations\/usmanov-circumvented-sanctions-for-russian-oligarchs-over-london-mansion\/\">uncovered<\/a>\u00a0how Usmanov managed to sell his stake in a London mansion less than a fortnight before he was added to the UK sanctions list. Usmanov\u2019s stake was transferred legally to his Russian business empire, meaning he could potentially still profit from his British interests.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>Last week, we also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendemocracy.net\/en\/prigozhin-government-russia-ukraine-hack-libel-slapp\/\">revealed<\/a>\u00a0that the UK government allowed another Putin ally, Yevgeny Prigozhin, to override sanctions against him in order to launch a legal attack on a British journalist.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>A British legal firm called Discreet Law obtained special licences from a department within the Treasury, allowing it to receive payments from Prigozhin.
