WE FOUGHT TRUMP, TIME TO FIGHT BIDEN TOO

This article from Left Voice (https://www.leftvoice.org/we-fought-trump-time-to-fight-biden-too) in the USA criticises those  illusions in Joe Biden, similar to those in Sir Keir Starmer, who believes he can be pressured from the Left. Biden was bankrolled  by major sections of Wall Street finance and Silicon Valley and these are the interests he will serve.

WE FOUGHT TRUMP, TIME TO FIGHT BIDEN TOO

At long last, it has been announced that Joe Biden has defeated Donald Trump for the presidency. While none of us will be sad to see Trump go, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are no friends to the working class and the oppressed.

After five days of Election Day, five days of counting votes, five days of CNN electoral maps, and five days of learning about every single county in Pennsylvania and Georgia, the United States has it’s newest imperialist in chief: Joe Biden. DOCTOR ISAAM HIJAWI – PRISON HUNGER STRIKE VICTORY

This is an update to the article from Working Class Club  we posted on 20.9.20 (http://republicancommunist.org/blog/2020/09/20/hunger-strikes-in-support-of-dr-issam-hijawi) about the hunger strike to protest at the imprisonment  of Dr. Issam Hijawi a Palestinian activist in Maghaberry Jail. This latest article was first posted by Socialist Democracy (Ireland).

DR. ISSAM HIJAWI – PRISON HUNGERS STRIKE VICTORY

Dr. Issam Hijawi and MM Prison Maghaberry, Lisburn

One duty of socialists is to keep record of the ebb and flow of struggles and their significance for future struggle.  That duty arises in relation to the recent republican hunger strike especially as, in a time of retreat,  it registered a modest victory.  Prison authorities, attempting to crush Palestinian Doctor Issam Hijjawi by using Covid-19 to justify extended solitary confinement,  were forced to retreat. THE WEIMARISATION OF US POLITICS

Daniel Lazare makes a comparison between pre-Hitler Germany and politics in the USA today.

THE WEIMARISATION OF US POLITICS

Is the US nearing its Weimar moment?

At first glance, any such analogy seems over the top. The Weimar Republic was born amid imperial defeat, revolution and civil war – a period that began when sailors mutinied in the Baltic port of Kiel in November 1918 and did not end until the suppression of the Munich Soviet Republic the following May. After that, Weimar lurched from crisis to crisis, as the economy weakened and left and rightwing militias fought pitched battles in beer halls and the streets. It finally gave up the ghost when Hitler took power in January 1933 and inaugurated the Third Reich. Continue reading “THE WEIMARISATION OF US POLITICS”

RACISM – CALLING A DIFFERENT TONE

The Emancipation & Liberation Editorial Board (EB) is posting this article by Will Stratford of the Platypus Affiliated Society (PAS) in the USA about the Left’s response to the BLM protests. PAS is a Left propagandist think-tank. The  EB is taking up Stratford’s challenge to the Left to publish his arguments. We invite others to respond.

RACISM – CALLING A DIFFERENT TONE

What if racism is not the biggest problem with our society today? I can tell you this much: it is not exactly a cool party trick to bring up the question with my friends, who are mostly Democrat-voting progressives. When I ask them, they look at me like I just gave a sieg heil to Hitler. I have to remind them: I am asking from the left, not the right. Continue reading “RACISM – CALLING A DIFFERENT TONE”

BERNIE SANDERS AND THE US CONSTITUTION – EXPLOSIVE CONTRADICTIONS

Category: How they are organised,US imperialismRCN @ 12:52 pm

The following article by Daniel Lazare was written in the first stage of the US presidential primaries when Bernie Sanders was in the lead, before the Right in the Democratic Party united behind Joe Biden on Super Tuesday. Sanders could still recover. This article though examines the unique nature of the US party system and how that relates to the US constitution which provides a formidable barrier to any democratic reform. This cautionary note is welcome because, as in the case of Jeremy Corbyn and his supporters, Sanders and his supporters seem to have a blind spot when it comes to the constitution. They see the existing constitutional set-ups as largely adequate  for their proposed neo-Keynesian economic reforms, centred on Green New Deals.

BERNIE SANDERS AND THE US CONSTITUTION –

EXPLOSIVE CONTRADICTIONS

The big political news in America is that Bernie Sanders has taken the lead in the race for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. He does not have a majority following victories in Iowa and New Hampshire – merely a plurality. But, although a thousand pitfalls lie in the way, it may conceivably be enough for the rest of the party to fall into line. If so, 2020 could be the most momentous president election since Eugene V Debs won a million votes, while stuck inside a federal penitentiary, exactly 100 years earlier. Only this time a self-proclaimed “socialist” might actually win. Continue reading “BERNIE SANDERS AND THE US CONSTITUTION – EXPLOSIVE CONTRADICTIONS”

SOLIDARITY WITH THE PEOPLE OF CATALUNYA

NATIONAL RALLY on the day of the Referendum

SUNDAY 1 OCTOBER 1PM

SPANISH CONSULATE,

63, NORTH CASTLE STREET, EDINBURGH EH2 3LJ

BRING BANNERS/FLAGS

___________

The ongoing shift to the Right in European politics is highlighted by the attempt by  Rajoy’s right wing Popular Party Spanish government to stop the Catalonian independence referendum through resort to repressive measures, including the mobilisation of the Civil Guard, a tactic regularly used by Franco. MSPs from the SNP, Labour, Lib-Dems and Greens  have all signed a letter condemning the actions of the Spanish state. The significant absence of any Tory MSP signatures shows that in the party’s post-Brexit move further to the Right, they are measuring up the possibilities of resorting to such measures in the future, in the event of another Scottish independence referendum.

Below we are posting two articles. The first is written by written by Chris Bambery of Counterfire, and a supporter of RISE, assessing the current situation in Catalunya. The second is written by Sean Bell for Common Space. Continue reading “SOLIDARITY WITH THE PEOPLE OF CATALUNYA”

a.     The limits placed on social democracy during a crisis of global capitalism

i.       We are living through a period of unprecedented global crisis – political, economic, social, and cultural. This means that ideas will be tested continuously. A democratic party based on the exploited and oppressed will have people from a whole number of tendencies – communist (as outlined in 2.f.iii), republican socialist, social democratic, movementist, green socialist, socialist feminist, environmental, etc. Continue reading “A CRITIQUE OF JEREMY CORBYN AND BRITISH LEFT SOCIAL DEMOCRACY, Part 3”

EMANCIPATION & LIBERATION RIC SPECIAL BULLETIN – September, 2014

Allan Armstrong (RCN) has written the following article for the RCN Radical Independence Campaign Special Bulletin, which will be distributed at the RIC National Forum in Glasgow on September 27th.

th-4

Nobody could have anticipated the rise of the Radical Independence Campaign, nor the form it would take. It has been moulded by the largest movement for popular democracy seen in these isles since the Irish War of Independence, and by a new clamouring for political participation and far-reaching changes, not only in Scotland, but across the globe. RIC has been a big success, despite displaying some of the political and organisational weaknesses found in works-in-progress.

SECULARISM: TIME TO SEPARATE CHURCH AND STATE

This is an introduction given by Allan Armstrong (RCN) to the Edinburgh branch of the Edinburgh Radical Independence Campaign on Monday, September 30th. It is followed by some responses from other socialists.

th-5

Two interesting articles were published last week. The first one in The Herald (27.9.13) highlighted the recent Scottish census, which pointed out that, for the first time, those professing no religion had emerged as the largest and fastest growing group in Scotland (37%). The second article in the Sunday Herald (22.9.13) highlighted the growing penetration of Protestant fundamentalist church activity in Scotland’s ‘non-denominational’ schools.

The best way to understand and deal with such issues is to take a secular approach. Twenty years ago, most people, especially on the Left, would have been quite clear what secularism meant. Secularism is the complete separation of religion from the state. People’s choice of religion or of no religion is a private matter.

CRISIS IN THE IRISH PEACE PROCESS

John McAnulty of Socialist Democracy (Ireland) highlights the significance of the recent Ulster Unionist challenge to the ‘Peace Process’.

“EQUALITY OF THE TWO TRADITIONS” HITS THE ROCKS

The anniversary of the Civil Rights march held in Belfast on 9th August, 2013

The anniversary of the Civil Rights march held in Belfast on 9th August, 2013

When a Sinn Fein commemoration march was barred from the small town of Castlederg in August, despite Sinn Fein’s role as junior partner in the local administration. Gerry Kelly expressed their frustration: “There are two narratives in this society, and both need to be equally respected”.

This belief is the central focus of Sinn Fein’s current ideology. Sometimes expressed through the metaphor of a journey, it suggests that both they and the unionists are making equal concessions in order to arrive at a “post conflict” society. The ideology has been used to justify the Shinners constant evolution to the right and acceptance of a colonial and sectarian settlement.
