2020 WAS ONE OF THE DEADLIEST YEARS FOR MIGRANTS – AND NOT JUST BECAUSE OF COVID

Emancipation & Liberation is posting this article by James Dennis Hoff of  Left Voices USA about the horrific number of migrant deaths in the EU and USA in 2020.

2020 WAS ONE OF THE DEADLIEST YEARS FOR MIGRANTS – AND NOT JUST BECAUSE OF COVID

On December 24, the bodies of more than 20 Tunisian refugees, including at least four pregnant women, were recovered after their boat sank in the Mediterranean Sea. The vessel, which was bound for the Italian island of Lampedusa, was reported to be carrying as many as 45 passengers, but only five people are known to have survived the wreck.

Like the more than 10,000 Tunisians who have attempted to reach Italy this year, these refugees were fleeing crushing poverty, economic deprivation, and a brutal IMF-imposed austerity plan that has caused irregular mass immigration since 2011 to several European countries including France, Italy, and Germany. Tens of thousands of Libyans and sub-Saharan African immigrants, fleeing poverty and violence, have also used Tunisian ports or attempted to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean, and hundreds have died in the attempt. US CRISIS AND REPOCRATIC POLITICS

In the following two articles, Daniel Lazare looks at the legacy of  ‘Repocratic’ politics. in the USA. In the first he emphasises the role of the US constitution in creating the stalemate in US politics. In the second he shows how Trump has boxed Biden in over US Middle East policy. This follows the Democrats’ success in boxing Trump in over his attempt to form an agreement with Putin’s Russia, the better to contain a rising Chinese imperialism and to break the EU’s protectionist hold  over much of Europe.

1. A GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED

American politics can be confusing, and here are just a few examples why:

 January 2017: Democratic Congressman John Lewis calls Donald Trump illegitimate a week prior to inauguration day, on the grounds that “the Russians participated in helping this man get elected, and they helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton”. The New York Times happily agrees, as do Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton. But then just last week, a Times editorial assails Republicans for questioning Biden’s legitimacy, because by doing so they “are undermining the rule of law”.1 . NEOLIBERALISM’S LAST STAND

This article from Left Voice in the USA examines the prospects for neoliberalism under a Joe Biden presidency

NEOLIBERALISM’S LAST STAND

Biden’s election is an attempt to revive the neoliberal order — one that is doomed to fail.

Hillary Clinton’s ignominious defeat in the 2016 elections has been widely viewed as a referendum on the failure of the neoliberal project. This is in large part because, in contrast to the outsider Donald Trump, Clinton represented the continuation of the same bipartisan establishment that had, for decades, placed the interests of an unbridled capitalist class above the needs of working people. From Ronald Reagan to Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama, the program of globalization, free markets, financialization, deregulation, and austerity had been, with few exceptions, hegemonic.

Since the 2008 crash, however, neoliberalism, as both an ideology and an economic project, has been in crisis, a crisis that shows signs of spreading into all aspects of American political life. This is one reason why an arrogant billionaire who pledged to “make America great again” could eke out an Electoral College victory against the establishment’s candidate. And why he almost managed to win a second term despite miserably failing to deliver on that promise. Although Trump’s xenophobic and nationalist rhetoric clearly represented a break with the neoliberal establishment, in practice his policy turned out to be pretty closely aligned with it. With the exception of his foreign and domestic trade policy, Trump governed much like Republicans before him, gutting regulations, slashing taxes on corporations and the wealthy, and preparing the ground for further fiscal austerity. DEFEND OUR DEMOCRATIC RIGHT TO KNOW – FREE JULIAN ASSANGE NOW

Steve Freeman gave a talk on  Julian Assange Case  at an RCN Zoom meeting on 8.11.20. He has now written this up and we have posted it below. This is followed by two comments, one by Seamus McGuigan, the other by Connor Beaton of the Republican Socialist Platform.

DEFEND OUR DEMOCRATIC RIGHT TO KNOW – FREE JULIAN ASSANGE NOW

Julian Assange being seized by the police

I will start with three questions:

  1. Will the defeat of Donald Trump and election of Joe Biden make any difference to the cruel and unjust treatment of Julian Assange
  2. Why or how does the treatment of Julian Assange make the case for a Scottish Republic?
  3. What can be done in Scotland to raise this case?

The Republican Socialist e-list provided some reading materials and through our zoom meetings we have our Youtube talk given by Deepa Driver, a UCU National Executive Member, chair of Camden Momentum and active supporter of Julian Assange. I listened to it today and would strongly recommend you watch this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCuSX8A0I78&t=26s). I am not going to give a blow-by-blow timeline. Instead, I want to concentrate on how we approach and understand this. Deepa identified four important points to be taken away. BIDEN: A TRANSITION TO NEO-TRUMPIST POPULISM?

E&L is posting the following two articles on the situation in the USA after Biden’s presidential electoral victory. Far from heralding a new “progressive” era, or even a return to “normality”, Biden is already preparing the grounds for  a neo-Trumpist populist backlash. The first article by . M. K. Kumar  in the USA looks at the nature of Biden’s transition team. The second article by Paul Demarty examines the pyrrhic nature of Biden’s “victory”.

BIDEN’S TRANSITION TEAM – NOTHING “PROGRESSIVE” ABOUT MILLIONAIRES AND CEOs

Cindy McCain, Republican and Chair of Hensley & Co

Joe Biden’s transition team is full of every kind of capitalist — CEOs, tech execs, even Republican lawmakers. Where are the Squad members or other progressives who were supposed to be moving his administration “to the left”?

Since Joe Biden won the 2020 Presidential election, there has been much speculation around the kind of president he will be. While some believe, he might be persuaded by the progressive wings of his party who are rallying for the Green New Deal and Medicare for All, there is no doubt that he will choose to remain a centrist Democrat, who prioritizes profit over people at every turn and sees capitalists as his only constituents in an America where “nothing will fundamentally change.” To understand his future Presidency, one need not look further than his transition team, composed of over 400 Obama-era staffers, academics, Congressional representatives — and more than a few tech moguls. The Biden-Harris campaign has touted this list as especially inclusive and diverse: more than half of the personnel will be women, and at least 40 percent are people of color or people who identify as LGBTQ+. A more diverse transition team however does not ensure the end of oppression and identity politics is no path to liberation. Continue reading “BIDEN: A TRANSITION TO NEO-TRUMPIST POPULISM?”

WE FOUGHT TRUMP, TIME TO FIGHT BIDEN TOO

This article from Left Voice (https://www.leftvoice.org/we-fought-trump-time-to-fight-biden-too) in the USA criticises those  illusions in Joe Biden, similar to those in Sir Keir Starmer, who believes he can be pressured from the Left. Biden was bankrolled  by major sections of Wall Street finance and Silicon Valley and these are the interests he will serve.

WE FOUGHT TRUMP, TIME TO FIGHT BIDEN TOO

At long last, it has been announced that Joe Biden has defeated Donald Trump for the presidency. While none of us will be sad to see Trump go, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are no friends to the working class and the oppressed.

After five days of Election Day, five days of counting votes, five days of CNN electoral maps, and five days of learning about every single county in Pennsylvania and Georgia, the United States has it’s newest imperialist in chief: Joe Biden. JOE BIDEN – RACIST AND SEXIST

We are posting these two articles which challenge those following Bernie Sanders in giving their support to Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate. The first article, by Daniel Lazare, takes up Biden’s appalling record of racism; the second by Tatiana Cozazarelli, his record of sexism.

1. THE BIDEN DISASTER – Daniel Lazare (https://daniellazare.com/about/)

2. JOE BIDEN AND THE FARCE OF LIBERAL FEMINISM – Tatiana Cozzarelli (Left Voice)

Pointing to a racist and sexist Joe Biden

1. THE BIDEN DISASTER

Another week, another disaster. As Joe Biden’s “You ain’t black” comment goes racing across the internet (see below), there has been a tendency to write it off as yet another verbal gaffe by a politician famous for letting his mouth rip before his brain is fully engaged. But it is not. In reality, the remark is a Freudian slip that pulls back the covers on the dismal relationship between the Democratic Party and the black Americans they supposedly champion. THE DEFEAT OF THE SANDERS CAMPAIGN

This article explaining the politics and consequences of the defeat of Bernie Sanders’ bid to become the Democratic Party US presidential candidate was posted by Socialist Democracy (Ireland).

________________

THE DEFEAT OF THE SANDERS CAMPAIGN

Joe’s my man now!

The claim about history repeating itself is often thrown around loosely but in the case of Bernie Sanders’ second bid to to be the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate it is very appropriate. Just as in 2016, his campaign galvanised hundreds of thousands of supporters (particularly amongst the young), raised millions of dollars in fund-raising, and scored a string of early victories. However, in the face of opposition from the Democratic leadership and blatant manipulation of the voting process, his campaign fizzled out and went down to defeat as he meekly folded and endorsed the establishment favourite Joe Biden. In many ways the 2020 campaign was more disappointing than that of 2016 when Bernie Sanders came from behind to win forty per cent of the delegates and push Hilary Clinton into the later rounds of the primary cycle.
