FURTHER POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS IN IRELAND: NORTH AND SOUTH

We are posting the following two articles from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) in the current situation in Ireland, North and South.

1. STORMONT EXECUTIVE TAKES A RECKLESS TURN ON PANDEMIC

Arlene Foster and Edwin Poots, DUP

For a long time Stormont has stood as a byword for sectarianism, corruption and incompetence. Under the pressure of the coronavirus crisis these features of the political institutions have been elevated to new levels. The past six months has seen political leaders breach Covid regulations; parties retain support grants that were mistakenly paid into their bank accounts; advice from health officials rejected; the representatives of medical professionals subjected to personalised attacks; and a minister claim that one community was primarily responsible for the spread of the virus. However the goings on within the Stormont Executive last week, over whether to extend or relax Covid regulations, have manged to top all of that. If the situation wasn’t so serious it would be comical. Yet the decisions made by government do have consequences and what has been agreed upon this week is likely to have very severe consequences for public health. THE GREEN NEW DEAL – A solution to environmental destruction?

This posting, originally from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) takes a critical look at the Green New Deals, which have been by adopted by various social democratic parties (most recently in Corbyn-led Labour’s 2019 general election manifesto). The article questions the economic viability of Keynesian inspired national New Deals, especially in a situation of an underlying capitalist crisis of profitability and global environmental degradation.  In the drive for profits, disregard for environmental consequences is endemic to capitalism. Overcoming ongoing global environmental degradation requires a global solution. which can only be provided by the complete uprooting of capitalism.

THE GREEN NEW DEAL – A solution to environmental destruction?

Many Left groups now put forward at the centre of their programme a Green New Deal. What is the Green New Deal? Continue reading “THE GREEN NEW DEAL – A solution to environmental destruction?”

FASCISM: IRELAND’S ILLUSION OF IMMUNITY BEGINS TO PALL

We are posting this article from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) which questions the complacency of the Left about the possibility of a growth of fascist forces in the Republic of Ireland.

FASCISM: IRELAND’S ILLUSION OF IMMUNITY BEGINS TO PALL

Attacks on Travellers in Ireland

Over the past decade there have been many boasts from liberals and leftists claiming immunity from a fascist threat in Ireland.

Gay rights,  abortion, social partnership covering almost all of society, the inability of forces to the right of Fine Gael to get a purchase, decline in the power of the church, the electoral rise of the reformist left.  What could go wrong? BREXIT SCAM – UP THE GARDEN PATH WITH LEO AND BORIS

We are posting this latest update from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) on the impact of Brexit on Ireland.

BREXIT SCAM – UP THE GARDEN PATH WITH LEO AND BORIS

The fact that perfidious Albion, famous for tearing up agreements, are tearing up the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement has been met with astonishment and dismay by the coalition government in Dublin.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin used very strong language. Trust had been eroded. There was worry and concern. Luckily however, he said that in a call yesterday Boris Johnson made it clear to him that the UK was ‘fully committed to meeting its obligations’. EVICTIONS OF MIGRANTS IN DUBLIN DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Thus article from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) examines the evictions of nine migrant workers from their homes in Dublin. Evictions: Round two of the battle against the banks and the government begins

EVICTIONS: ROUND TWO OF THE BATTLE AGAINST THE BANKS AND GOVERNMENT BEGINS

Nine tenants have been evicted in Berkeley Road Dublin by masked men garbed in black who seized and boarded up the property on Wednesday 12th August.  The tenants had not received an eviction notice to vacate the home.

One tenant said:“This is our home, in the middle of the pandemic you threw us on the road … I lived in this home nearly nine years, within seconds I am homeless now,” she said. Continue reading “EVICTIONS OF MIGRANTS IN DUBLIN DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC”

LATEST POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS IN IRELAND – SOUTH AND NORTH

We are posting an update on the most recent political developments in the Dail and Stormont from Socialist Democracy (Ireland).

1. DUBLIN GOVERNMENT SUPPRESSES THE PARLIAMENTARY LEFT – BUT EXACTLY WHO ARE THE LEFT?

  1. 33rd Irish Dail

The 33rd Irish Dail has demonstrated in spades just how unstable it is. Effectively a national government of opposing parties, held together by a Green Party glue, they stumbled in their first month with a faction fight inside Fianna Fail and the sacking of a minister.  More recently a Green Party TD resigned the whip to vote against limitations on a rent freeze while a Green minister abstained.

The plans for dealing with that instability were made clear on 30th July,  when new parliamentary speaking rules were introduced,  severely curtailing the rights of the smaller opposition parties and the Dail is now closing for the summer. THE POLITICAL SITUATION IN IRELAND AFTER THE FORMATION OF THE COALITION GOVERNMENT

We are posting two articles from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) about the political situation on Ireland since the formation of the Fianna Fail, Fine Gael/Grene Party coalition government.

WHAT IS A SHARED IRELAND AND IS A BORDER POLL THE ANSWER?

The new programme for government for the three party coalition in Dublin includes a commitment to a ‘shared island’. The proposals include a new unit within the Taoiseach’s office which will work towards; ‘consensus on a shared island’, a strategic review of the British-Irish relationship, the consolidation of North-South co-operation, strengthening of ‘Strand 3’ institutions like the British Irish Intergovernmental Council and a deepening of Ireland’s relationships with the devolved governments of Wales and Scotland. If you haven’t heard of these its because they are meaningless prinkles designed to decorate the renewed partition of Ireland contained in the Good Friday Agreement (GFA). FANTASY FOOTBALL – THE IRISH LEFT AND FORMING A ‘LEFT GOVERNMENT’

This article, originally posted by Socialist Democracy (Ireland) looks at the attempts by People before Profit and RISE to form a ‘Left government’ in Ireland with Sinn Fein.

FANTASY FOOTBALL – THE IRISH LEFT AND FORMING A ‘LEFT GOVERNMENT’

Time for Unity – with whom and for what?

Recently People before Profit reopened talks with Sinn Fein about building an alternative left government in opposition to the attempts by Fianna Fail and Fine Gael to construct a parliamentary majority. Continue reading “FANTASY FOOTBALL – THE IRISH LEFT AND FORMING A ‘LEFT GOVERNMENT’”
