8th AMENDMENT REFERENDUM

We are posting the following article from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) on the victory  over the forces of the traditionalist Right in the 8th Amendment referendum on abortion in Ireland.

CATHOLIC CHURCH KNOCKED DOWN BY REPEAL VOTE –

BUT THE IRISH STATE DODGES THE BULLET

The success of the referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment of the Irish Constitution and legislation for abortion reform produced a deafening hurrah that should echo to all corners of the planet. The result is a body blow to the Catholic Church and to the reactionary church-state counter-revolution established following the Irish Civil War. Continue reading “8th AMENDMENT REFERENDUM”

EIRIGI ELECTION WORKERS ASSAULTED BY GARDA SPECIAL BRANCH

Many socialists are aware of the continued repressive role of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (the old RUC) when it comes to dealing with legal Republican opposition in the ‘Six Counties’. However, this article highlights the role of the Irish police force, the garda, in its attempts to suppress legal political activity in the ’26 counties’. Eirigi is a socialist republican organisation, with a councillor, Louise Minihan, on Dublin City Council.

On Thursday evening (February 6) two éirígí election workers were assaulted by a member of the Garda Special Detective Unit – more commonly known as the ‘Special Branch’. The assaults mark a significant escalation in the ongoing campaign of harassment of éirígí activists by the Dublin government’s political police.

HUMAN RIGHTS ARE UNDER THREAT IN NORTH OF IRELAND

New York based Sandy Boyer is the co-host of “Radio Free Eireann” broadcast Saturdays at 1pm on WBAI, 99.5 FM, or wbai.org. He has helped to mobilize support for political prisoners including Marian Price, Roisin McAliskey, the Birmingham 6, Pol Brennan and Joe Doherty. Here he outlines the continued threat to human rights in Northern Ireland.

Fifteen years ago, the Good Friday Agreement promised a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland. Today there is still no Bill of Rights, and human rights are under a severe and sustained attack.

G8 SUMMIT AT ENNISKILLEN

The G8 summit was held  in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland, from June 17th – 18th. It is eight years since the G8 summit held at Gleneagles in July 2005. Emancipation & Liberation covered that summit quite extensively in issue no. 11 (see http://republicancommunist.org/blog/category/publications/emancipation-liberation/issue-11/). Little has changed.

The first article by John McAnulty of  Socialist Democracy (Ireland) shows the wider significance of the Enniskillen location chosen for this summit. This venue was chosen to help prop of the UK-Irish government Peace Process in the North and to maintain this as an international example of imperialist conflict resolution. As the second report, this time from eirigi highlights, massive amounts have been spent on security, with police and other security forces mobilised from across the UK. Significantly, police forces from across the UK, are now also being sent to help the PSNI manage the annual Orange Order sectarian Unionist/Loyalist supremacist marches. Legitimate attempts to protest  at Enniskillen and Belfast were clamped down on by the police, just as they were in Edinburgh and Auchterarder in 2005.

This is followed by two earlier articles. One from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) highlights the significance of the choice of venue for the British government, and Ireland’s current position, subjected both to EU and US/British imperialism. Another from eirigi, makes an overall political assessment of the two day event.

The Bedroom Tax in Northern Ireland

This article on the ‘Bedroom Tax’ in Northern Ireland comes from eirigi. Several parallels (some erroneous and some useful) have been drawn between the ‘Bedroom Tax’ and the Poll Tax. However, even Thatcher’s Tory government never tried to introduce the Poll Tax into Northern Ireland in the context of the Republican struggle there. Today, the UK government feels more confident. This only re-emphasises a most important feature of the successful Anti-Poll Tax campaign – the necessity to organise on an ‘internationalism from below’ basis.

BEDROOM TAX A PUNITIVE ATTACK ON THE POOR

Fond memories of Thatcher on the Falls Road - where at least there was no Poll Tax!

Fond memories of Thatcher on the Falls Road – where at least there was no Poll Tax!

Next month, as Stormont starts to debate the Welfare Reform Bill, thousands of families in Housing Executive homes or renting from housing associations in the Six Counties face the bleak prospect of losing a substantial portion of their housing benefit if their home is deemed to be “under-occupied”, with only one bedroom allowed for each couple or individual over 16.

More than 32,000 households stand to be affected by this ‘bedroom tax’. Contrary to the impression being created by proponents of this scheme, the vast majority of the homes affected are “under-occupied” by just one bedroom.

The Six Counties already faces a growing housing crisis with almost 35,000 applicants on the social housing waiting list.

TWISTING FACTS TO SUIT BRITISH LAW

The article below highlights the state harassment of eirigi activist, Stephen Murney from Newry. Eirigi is a legal socialist republican organisation with members in both parts of Ireland. This article shows how the British state is determined to marginalise all criticism of its current Northern Ireland set-up, by going to elaborate lengths to create the illusion that any  criticism it objects to is  ‘terrorist activity’.

Demonstration in Newry in support of Stephen Murney

Demonstration in Newry in support of Stephen Murney

On the morning  of February 21st, in Newry court-house, éirígí activist Stephen Murney faced additional charges following his removal from Maghaberry prison by the PSNI the previous day and his subsequent detention at Antrim interrogation centre. Half an hour before the actual hearing, the court-room had been filled to capacity by Stephen’s family, friends and party comrades.

These latest charges directly relate to other charges against Stephen and demonstrate an attempt by the PSNI and Six County prosecution service to bolster what is widely recognised as an already weak case solely initiated as a blatant and crude attempt at political censorship.

The new charges included one relating to a single photograph, which Stephen has already been charged with possessing. On the basis, that having taken a photograph with which he had previously been charged with possessing last year, the prosecution now accused Stephen of “collecting information which may be of use to terrorists and possession of articles which may be of use to terrorists”.

LECKEY DECISION “ABSOLUTELY SHAMEFUL”

The statement below, concerning the halting of 14 inquests into the activities of the British state forces in the Six Counties, was first posted on the eirigi website.

John Leckey, Northern Ireland Senior Coroner

Rúnaí ginearálta (General Secretary) éirígí, Breandán Mac Cionnaith, has described the decision by the senior coroner, John Leckey, in the Six Counties to halt fourteen inquests involving British state forces as “absolutely shameful”.

In a statement issued on behalf of the socialist republican party, Mac Cionnaith said, “Over the course of forty years, hundreds of people met their deaths at the hands of British state forces or unionist death-squads which those same forces controlled. In many of those cases, inquests were either not held or else held in the absence of the victims’ relatives.

“In recent years, fourteen of those families, who have campaigned long and hard over protracted periods of time, were led to believe that inquests into the full circumstances surrounding the murders of their relatives would commence shortly. Even in those cases, the British state, its armed forces and its shadowy secret agencies, sought to delay the commencement of those inquests and to put legal roadblocks and obstacles in the families’ paths.

MI5 – THEY HAVEN’T GONE AWAY YOU KNOW!

Below we publish two recent articles from the Irish republican socialist organisation, eirigi, which deal with the continued activities of MI5 in the ‘Six Counties’.

SHINING A LIGHT ON THE SHADOWS

MI5 – another repressive institution sanctioned under the Crown Powers

The Conway Mill on Belfast’s Fall Road was the setting for a very well-attended public meeting on Thursday [November 8] at which éirígí launched its latest ‘Know Your Rights’ leaflet.

As concern grows in communities across the Six Counties about the increasing activities of Britain’s MI5, the party has produced a four-page information and advice leaflet setting out the steps people should take if they find themselves approached by the secretive spying organisation.

The meeting, chaired by Belfast éirígí activist Máire Drumm, began with a fifteen minute video presentation detailing some of MI5’s methods of operation.

She then introduced the first of two speakers at the meeting, éirígí’s rúnaí ginearálta, Breandán Mac Cionnaith.

Mac Cionnaith explained that the party had seen an upsurge in people coming forward to report approaches made to them by MI5, approaches which often occurring with the co-operation of the Six County police force.

€9 WORTH OF CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO GILMORE’S CAR

Eamon Gilmore, the Irish Labour Party Tanaiste (Depute Prime Minister) took protestor, Donall O Ceallaigh, to court for criminal damage to his car. The following article from eirigi highlights both the light, and far mote serious sides to this case.

An egg causes ‘damage’ to Gilmore’s car

Peals of laughter rang out in Court 4 of the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin this morning when it was revealed that a grand total of €9 worth of ‘criminal damage’ had been allegedly caused to the ministerial car of Eamon Gilmore during an éirígí organised anti-austerity protest in Ballyfermot on Friday October 5th.

Further laughter erupted when the Garda witness revealed that the €9 had been spent on a car wash which ‘repaired’ the ‘criminal damage.’ Despite the obvious farce of the situation the charges of criminal damage and breach of the peace against Dónall Ó Ceallaigh were not struck out by the presiding judge.

Speaking in relation to the court appearance Cathaoirleach éirígí Brian Leeson said, “Today’s court proceedings would have been hilarious had the judge thrown the case out of court, but as it stands a young man remains on criminal charges; facing the prospect of criminal convictions. When Dónall was originally charged the Gardaí claimed that somewhere in the region of €200 worth of damage had been done to Gilmore’s car and possibly more, but now it turns out there was no damage at all. If criminal damage can be fixed with a car wash the Gardaí might want to consider charging the seagulls and pigeons that regularly cause criminal damage to cars across the state!”
