BREXIT – A NEW CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS

We are posting the following two articles on the Brexit. The first by  Steve Freeman, posted on the Republican Socialist Network blog, highlights the  nature of the constitutional crisis article brought about by Brexit. The second from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) is  about the likely political impact of Brexit on Ireland and the illusion that this will pave the wa  to Irish reunification under the auspices of the Irish Dail and the Northern Irish Stormont.

1. VOTING AGAINST  THE TORY DEAL

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland left the European Union in February 2020 with a stay of execution until 31 December 2020. On the 30 December the country faced a dire emergency. Next day the Great Britain would crash out of the Single Market and Customs Union, leaving Northern Ireland in the single market for goods with a EU customs border with the rest of the UK. The only question in doubt is whether there would be the safety net of a trade deal to prevent a crash. Continue reading “BREXIT – A NEW CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS”

THE DEMONISATION OF ASSANGE PAVES THE WAY FOR MORE RAPE AND MURDER BY THE STATE

In the aftermath of the Julian Assange trial we are posting this article by Lisa Longstaff of Women Agains Rape (https://womenagainstrape.net). This is followed by a link to the  Amnesty International petition, ‘The USA must drop charges against Julian Assange’.

THE DEMONISATION OF ASSANGE PAVES THE WAY FOR MORE RAPE AND MURDER BY THE STATE

Belmarsh High Security Prison

We are relieved the court ruled not to extradite Julian Assange to the US. His immediate release from Belmarsh, classified as torture by the UN Special Rapporteur, especially under coronavirus, must follow. The refusal of bail must be reversed immediately.

As an anti-rape organisation, we resent the original use of alleged sex offences to facilitate Assange’s extradition to the US via Sweden. Knowing the evidence, that case was never viable, but it initiated and fuelled a witch-hunt against Assange and diverted from the real target: his Wikileaks reporting. HERD IMMUNITY – MYTH AND REALITY

Following  our continuing series of articles on Covid-19 We are posting this piece form Socialist Democracy (Ireland) in the myth of herd immunity.

HERD IMMUNITY – MYTH AND REALITY

While many scientific myths have emerged during the course of the global pandemic the most prominent and persistence of these has undoubtedly been that of “herd immunity”. Its basic proposition is that by allowing the virus to spread among sections of the population that are considered least susceptible to severe illness a level of immunity can be built up that breaks transmission and protects the population as a whole. The implication of this in terms of public health policy is a rejection of restrictive measures such as lockdowns. This certainly has an appeal to governments and most of them – to one degree or another – have adopted a strategy that is influenced by the herd immunity approach. Given the negativity surrounding the concept, this is never admitted publicly. It is usually given the softer framing of “Living with Covid” (a phrase which has been adopted by the Irish government). A blunter version of this is the recent admission from the Trump administration that it was “not going to control the pandemic”. Continue reading “HERD IMMUNITY – MYTH AND REALITY”

BIDEN: A TRANSITION TO NEO-TRUMPIST POPULISM?

E&L is posting the following two articles on the situation in the USA after Biden’s presidential electoral victory. Far from heralding a new “progressive” era, or even a return to “normality”, Biden is already preparing the grounds for  a neo-Trumpist populist backlash. The first article by . M. K. Kumar  in the USA looks at the nature of Biden’s transition team. The second article by Paul Demarty examines the pyrrhic nature of Biden’s “victory”.

BIDEN’S TRANSITION TEAM – NOTHING “PROGRESSIVE” ABOUT MILLIONAIRES AND CEOs

Cindy McCain, Republican and Chair of Hensley & Co

Joe Biden’s transition team is full of every kind of capitalist — CEOs, tech execs, even Republican lawmakers. Where are the Squad members or other progressives who were supposed to be moving his administration “to the left”?

Since Joe Biden won the 2020 Presidential election, there has been much speculation around the kind of president he will be. While some believe, he might be persuaded by the progressive wings of his party who are rallying for the Green New Deal and Medicare for All, there is no doubt that he will choose to remain a centrist Democrat, who prioritizes profit over people at every turn and sees capitalists as his only constituents in an America where “nothing will fundamentally change.” To understand his future Presidency, one need not look further than his transition team, composed of over 400 Obama-era staffers, academics, Congressional representatives — and more than a few tech moguls. The Biden-Harris campaign has touted this list as especially inclusive and diverse: more than half of the personnel will be women, and at least 40 percent are people of color or people who identify as LGBTQ+. A more diverse transition team however does not ensure the end of oppression and identity politics is no path to liberation. Continue reading “BIDEN: A TRANSITION TO NEO-TRUMPIST POPULISM?”

FURTHER POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS IN IRELAND: NORTH AND SOUTH

We are posting the following two articles from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) in the current situation in Ireland, North and South.

1. STORMONT EXECUTIVE TAKES A RECKLESS TURN ON PANDEMIC

Arlene Foster and Edwin Poots, DUP

For a long time Stormont has stood as a byword for sectarianism, corruption and incompetence. Under the pressure of the coronavirus crisis these features of the political institutions have been elevated to new levels. The past six months has seen political leaders breach Covid regulations; parties retain support grants that were mistakenly paid into their bank accounts; advice from health officials rejected; the representatives of medical professionals subjected to personalised attacks; and a minister claim that one community was primarily responsible for the spread of the virus. However the goings on within the Stormont Executive last week, over whether to extend or relax Covid regulations, have manged to top all of that. If the situation wasn’t so serious it would be comical. Yet the decisions made by government do have consequences and what has been agreed upon this week is likely to have very severe consequences for public health. END THE HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT – DEFEND ASYLUM SEEKERS AND REFUGEES

We are posting this article by Fred Laplat and Mile Picken, first posted by Socialist Resistance (https://socialistresistance.org/end-the-hostile-environment-defend-asylum-seekers-and-refugees/20861), about the Tories post-Brexit attacks on asylum seekers and refugees, harbingers of stepped up attacks on all migrant workers

END THE HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT – DEFEND ASYLUM SEEKERS AND REFUGEES

The recently revealed Tory plans to disperse asylum seekers thousands of miles away are another example of the racism of the UK governments’ brand of neoliberalism.  Meanwhile, existing asylum seekers within the UK are facing inhumane treatment by private contractors, incarcerated and facing Covid outbreaks, deportation and frequent movement that also risk spreading the virus among the asylum community. TRADE UNIONISTS RALLY FOR RICHIE VENTON AND EXTEND ACTION

We are posting this follow-up article to the posting from Mike Picken of Socialist Resistance to the earlier posting from the Reinstate Richie Venton Campaign (http://republicancommunist.org/blog/2020/09/06/reinstate-richie-venton/)

TRADE UNIONISTS RALLY FOR RICHIE VENTON AND EXTEND ACTION

Trade unionists across Britain and Ireland are rallying to support Richie Venton following his sacking at IKEA Glasgow.  Mike Picken reports from Glasgow.

A veteran trade union and socialist activist, Richie is the IKEA Glasgow convenor and shop steward for the retail workers union USDAW and a member of the union executive. He was dismissed for opposing IKEA’s plans to withhold sick pay from workers including those following Scottish government policy of self-isolating due to Covid-19 symptoms and infections. DOCTOR ISAAM HIJAWI – PRISON HUNGER STRIKE VICTORY

This is an update to the article from Working Class Club  we posted on 20.9.20 (http://republicancommunist.org/blog/2020/09/20/hunger-strikes-in-support-of-dr-issam-hijawi) about the hunger strike to protest at the imprisonment  of Dr. Issam Hijawi a Palestinian activist in Maghaberry Jail. This latest article was first posted by Socialist Democracy (Ireland).

DR. ISSAM HIJAWI – PRISON HUNGERS STRIKE VICTORY

Dr. Issam Hijawi and MM Prison Maghaberry, Lisburn

One duty of socialists is to keep record of the ebb and flow of struggles and their significance for future struggle.  That duty arises in relation to the recent republican hunger strike especially as, in a time of retreat,  it registered a modest victory.  Prison authorities, attempting to crush Palestinian Doctor Issam Hijjawi by using Covid-19 to justify extended solitary confinement,  were forced to retreat. GLASGOW STUDENTS CALL FOR A RENT STRIKE

Paul Inglis of the Republican Socialist Platform has written the following article on the proposed Glasgow University Students’ Rent Strike (also see  https://twitter.com/UofGRentStrike)

GLASGOW UNIVERSITY STUDENTS CALL FOR A RENT STRIKE

The big news of the last few days has concerned the outbreaks of COVID-19 in student halls at Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen and Edinburgh. With an explosion of positive cases, especially at Glasgow University, hundreds of students in halls have been placed into quarantine[1], and every single student in Scotland has now been banned from going to pubs and cafes for the weekend beginning the 25th September[2]. But beyond the predictable impulse to blame this all on wild student flat parties over Freshers’ Week, there are important questions that must be asked about the decision on the part of university managements across the country to open up halls again for the new academic year. How could it be a good idea, amid a pandemic, to encourage students to move into halls of residence, where multiple people share the same kitchen and bathroom spaces, when all courses are online? The result has been a public health disaster, and it has certainly contributed to the ongoing, country-wide collapse into a second lockdown. Furthermore, from the interviews with students being run by BBC News, it appears that students were often unaware that all their classes would be online prior to moving in.
