JULIAN ASSANGE – TRIAL OF THE CENTURY

“A murderous system is being created before our very eyes” – Nils Melzer, UN Special Reporter on Torture

The trial of Julian Assange taking place right now at the Old Bailey cannot and must not be seen in isolation to the criminal actions of the US government and military globally, no less to the political instrumentalisation of judicial process within its client-states and the incremental incursions upon press freedom and democratic expression. If we lose Assange, the very right to resist such a paradigm can only wither – we stand to lose the best part of ourselves. Continue reading “JULIAN ASSANGE – TRIAL OF THE CENTURY”

BERNIE SANDERS AND THE US CONSTITUTION – EXPLOSIVE CONTRADICTIONS

Category: How they are organised,US imperialismRCN @ 12:52 pm

The following article by Daniel Lazare was written in the first stage of the US presidential primaries when Bernie Sanders was in the lead, before the Right in the Democratic Party united behind Joe Biden on Super Tuesday. Sanders could still recover. This article though examines the unique nature of the US party system and how that relates to the US constitution which provides a formidable barrier to any democratic reform. This cautionary note is welcome because, as in the case of Jeremy Corbyn and his supporters, Sanders and his supporters seem to have a blind spot when it comes to the constitution. They see the existing constitutional set-ups as largely adequate  for their proposed neo-Keynesian economic reforms, centred on Green New Deals.

BERNIE SANDERS AND THE US CONSTITUTION –

EXPLOSIVE CONTRADICTIONS

The big political news in America is that Bernie Sanders has taken the lead in the race for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. He does not have a majority following victories in Iowa and New Hampshire – merely a plurality. But, although a thousand pitfalls lie in the way, it may conceivably be enough for the rest of the party to fall into line. If so, 2020 could be the most momentous president election since Eugene V Debs won a million votes, while stuck inside a federal penitentiary, exactly 100 years earlier. Only this time a self-proclaimed “socialist” might actually win. Continue reading “BERNIE SANDERS AND THE US CONSTITUTION – EXPLOSIVE CONTRADICTIONS”

THE CONTINUED US MILITARY USE OF SHANNON AIRPORT

Category: How they are organised,Ireland,US imperialismRCN @ 3:45 pm

John Lannon, for IMI-Standpunkt, has written this article on the

continued use of Shannon Airport by US military forces

Margaretta D'Arcy protesting on Shannon runway

Margaretta D’Arcy protesting on Shannon runway

Shannon Airport, situated on the west coast of Ireland, used to be a busy civilian airport. The Irish government gave tax breaks for companies to set up manufacturing facilities in the nearby Shannon Free Zone; Shannon Development, which is the agency responsible for economic development in the region, attracted the multinationals in; and the airport ferried people in and out.

US HANDS OFF SYRIA!

Protest in Washington against US war on Syria

Protest in Washington against US war on Syria

We are posting this statement from Socialist Action (USA), which takes a principled stance on US intervention in Syria. It also refers indirectly to the UK government’s failure to provide  backing for an immediate US-led attack on Syria as part of the “coalition of the idling”.

The Barack Obama-led march to yet another “war” suffered an important but far from definitive setback when the usual U.S. “coalition of the willing” failed to materialize in late August to lend a fig leaf of Great Power authority to what then appeared to be an imminent U.S. attack on Syria. But Obama’s threatened deadly missile strike still remains high on the imperial agenda and requires nothing less than massive and united mobilizations of all antiwar forces to challenge it.
