A STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF BRIAN HIGGINS, BLACKLISTED BUILDING WORKER

A STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF BRIAN HIGGINS, BLACKLISTED BUILDING WORKER

Brian Higgins, a militant in the building industry, first in UCATT and later in UNITE, has been taken into hospital. Brian has been the most blacklisted worker in the UK. For many years before he would have retired, he was unable to get work. This put immense pressure both on Brian and his family, particularly his ever-supportive wife, Helen. Following the public exposure of the blacklist in the building industry, Brian found strong evidence of collaboration between the employers and a UCATT official in his blacklisting. That official cited in a redacted document was Jerry Swain. Continue reading “A STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF BRIAN HIGGINS, BLACKLISTED BUILDING WORKER”

BLACKLIST – ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, TIME FOR ACTION

Blacklisting continues on a daily basis up and down the country. Why, oh why? With our best trade union activists denied work and kept off-sits, this massively lessens our ability to organise and stand up to building employers on site. This means no ELECTED conveners or other shop stewards or safety reps, and our lives at risk every day with no one we can trust to negotiate on our behalf with site management.

GREEDY EMPLOYERS

Employers, whose only concern is amassing ever more profit and wealth, see building workers in trade unions as troublesome and awkward and a threat to what they see as their absolute right to exploit and extract as much profit as [in]humanly possible from us. All this with no regard whatsoever for anything else like health and safety, or wages and conditions. If they could get away with it, they would put us all on or below the minimum wage (which quite a few are already on), and bring in more workers from overseas-who they see as cheap labour-but who we see as fellow workers entitled to decent wages-to make up the numbers. Although they basically don’t like unions, they are quite happy to work with, and control, APPOINTED full-time officials and stooge convener stewards. What they do not want are ELECTED site stewards who will strive to ensure sites [that] are 100% safe, and workers on them earn good wages and have decent working conditions. And if you hint at any of these things in today’s construction industry, you are sacked and blacklisted on the spot. Witness Crossrail dispute. This cannot be allowed to continue any longer. Enough is Enough!

APPLAUSE

We applaud the Blacklist Support Group, and also thank those in the unions, like the sparks in UNITE, as well as Labour MPs in Parliament, European MPs, plus all those journalists and their organisations who have helped so much to publicise, and helped so much in the fight against this anti-social, anti-democratic and sinister practice. We also thank lawyers Guney Clark and Ryan, without whom we blacklisted workers would have been left legally high and dry. Together we have put blacklisting on the political, social and legal map of Britain, and the sparks with their action over BESNA , and now Crossrail, have put it firmly on the industrial map.

Rank and filer, Jerry Hicks contests Broad Leftist bureaucrat, Len McCluskey in election for UNITE general secretary.

Unite is currently holding an election for its General Secretary in which there are only two candidates. The nomination period began on the 1st January ending on 15th February. Each candidate requires 50 Branch Nominations to contest the election.  In 2010 Jerry Hicks secured 52,527 votes and beat 2 senior officials when runner up to Len McCluskey. McCluskey has called a snap election for the position of UNITE general secretary, designed to keep him in power for the indefinite future. He is the only candidate, but rank and file candidate Gerry Hicks is battling for nomination.

There is no mandate, renewed or otherwise unless the 1.5 million members get to vote!

We are at the end of Week 3 with 4 weeks left in the nomination period for Unite General Secretary. 30 Branch Secretaries have contacted me to say we have their nominations.

This is great news, and there are sure to some more that we are not aware of. However we expect a large number of ‘strike outs’ where nominations are ruled invalid for various spurious reasons, which means we really need more like 60 or 70 nominations to be sure of being on the ballot paper and thereby giving all the members a say in who is to be their General Secretary.

Please find 2 attachments: 1] The latest press release, which is an account of the recent London Construction branch nomination night. It goes a long way to showing the efforts being made to stop us getting the 50 nominations we need. Take this as a compliment, but we will need to be extra careful about who is voting! Card checks are a good way, as Wednesday night confirms.

3 years early, fast tracked ‘unfamiliar faces’ and now the snow!
Getting 50 Nominations won’t be easy, but imagine how we will feel when we do?!
