THE GREEN NEW DEAL – A solution to environmental destruction?

This posting, originally from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) takes a critical look at the Green New Deals, which have been by adopted by various social democratic parties (most recently in Corbyn-led Labour’s 2019 general election manifesto). The article questions the economic viability of Keynesian inspired national New Deals, especially in a situation of an underlying capitalist crisis of profitability and global environmental degradation.  In the drive for profits, disregard for environmental consequences is endemic to capitalism. Overcoming ongoing global environmental degradation requires a global solution. which can only be provided by the complete uprooting of capitalism.

THE GREEN NEW DEAL – A solution to environmental destruction?

Many Left groups now put forward at the centre of their programme a Green New Deal. What is the Green New Deal? Continue reading “THE GREEN NEW DEAL – A solution to environmental destruction?”

THE WEIMARISATION OF US POLITICS

Daniel Lazare makes a comparison between pre-Hitler Germany and politics in the USA today.

THE WEIMARISATION OF US POLITICS

Is the US nearing its Weimar moment?

At first glance, any such analogy seems over the top. The Weimar Republic was born amid imperial defeat, revolution and civil war – a period that began when sailors mutinied in the Baltic port of Kiel in November 1918 and did not end until the suppression of the Munich Soviet Republic the following May. After that, Weimar lurched from crisis to crisis, as the economy weakened and left and rightwing militias fought pitched battles in beer halls and the streets. It finally gave up the ghost when Hitler took power in January 1933 and inaugurated the Third Reich. Continue reading “THE WEIMARISATION OF US POLITICS”

THE POLITICAL SITUATION IN IRELAND AFTER THE FORMATION OF THE COALITION GOVERNMENT

We are posting two articles from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) about the political situation on Ireland since the formation of the Fianna Fail, Fine Gael/Grene Party coalition government.

WHAT IS A SHARED IRELAND AND IS A BORDER POLL THE ANSWER?

The new programme for government for the three party coalition in Dublin includes a commitment to a ‘shared island’. The proposals include a new unit within the Taoiseach’s office which will work towards; ‘consensus on a shared island’, a strategic review of the British-Irish relationship, the consolidation of North-South co-operation, strengthening of ‘Strand 3’ institutions like the British Irish Intergovernmental Council and a deepening of Ireland’s relationships with the devolved governments of Wales and Scotland. If you haven’t heard of these its because they are meaningless prinkles designed to decorate the renewed partition of Ireland contained in the Good Friday Agreement (GFA). IRISH GOVERNMENT HYPOCRISY

The following three articles from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) contrasts how the Irish government deals with mega-corporations, 12,000 Aer Lingus workers threatened with redundancy, and sacked Debenhams’ workers who have taken action

Irish government assists Apple in $13B tax fraud

The announcement that the European Court had rejected a Commission fine of over €13 billion for a tax scheme with the Apple corporation was greeted with jubilation in Ireland.

The nervous hilarity was reminiscent of a bad melodrama where the Mafia clan escape a guilty verdict through the brilliance of their genius lawyer. The flaw in the European Commission’s case was that it was based on selective advantage. It failed to show that two rulings given by the Irish Revenue, in 1991 and 2007, afforded Apple a selective advantage. Continue reading “IRISH GOVERNMENT HYPOCRISY”

APPLE AND IRELAND – WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT?

We are posting this article from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) about the conspiracy between the Irish government and Apple to avoid paying taxation.

APPLE AND IRELAND – WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT?

th-2

The details of the criminal conspiracy between Apple and the Irish government may be utterly shocking, as is the brazen defiance shown by Dublin and the computer giant in opposing the European ruling. We knew they paid little tax, but essentially zero? Who would have thought it?
