REMEMBERING THE SOMME

REMEMBERING THE SOMME

th-3

SATURDAY, JULY 1st, 5.00 pm

DONALD DEWAR STATUE

BUCHANAN STREET

GLASGOW

Organised by the Scottish Peace Network

On July 1 at 5pm at the Dewar’s statue on Buchanan Street in Glasgow city centre, the Scottish Peace Network is holding a centenary event to remember the disaster of the battle of the Somme. We will have a short speech on the historical context and a reading of poems to start and then a time for everyone attending to give their thoughts on war and militarism.

The Somme was the bloodiest battle of World War I. More than one million soldiers were either killed or badly wounded. In the end, the battle changed little and the war continued to grind on for two more years.

As the wars in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan continue, resulting in millions having to flee their homes, the centenary of the battle of the Somme provides a salient moment to remember the futility of war.

THE CURSE OF NATIONALISM

Eric Chester (RCN) outlines his view of the political dangers represented by the SNP

th

The independence referendum has substantially changed the political landscape of Scotland. With 45% of the voters supporting independence, and many others deterred from joining them by a last minute fear campaign, there is a widespread belief that the election was stolen and that another referendum is in order. Still, there is no possibility of another independence vote being held for at least another five years. This stalemate has engendered a deep resentment that pervades Scottish society.

REJECT IMPERIALISM – REJECT THE POPPY

In a year when the UK state and mainstream media has being trying to promote a celebration of the First World War,we are posting this article, by Alex McGuigan, from the James Connolly Society website at http://107cowgate.com/2014/11/03/reject-imperialism-reject-the-poppy/

th-4

A few years back, there was an article that received considerable publicity from an individual who claimed to be an Irish Republican but who also stated that they would now be wearing a British Legion poppy.  It is no-one’s right to dictate what a person can or can not wear, but we certainly can define what an Irish Republican is and it has since turned out that the individual was in fact a constitutional nationalist, rather than an Irish Republican.  Traditional Republicans and indeed Irish Republican Socialists will not be availing of the British Legion’s emblems for all too obvious reasons.

Scotland out of NATO

Eric Chester reports on recent developments in the Scottish peace movement

The Trident missiles armed with Nuclear warheads located at Faslane Naval Base have become a flashpoint for Scottish activists. One of the few specific pledges made by Alex Salmond and the SNP during the referendum campaign was a commitment that no nuclear weapons would be based in an independent Scotland. The SNP was responding to a popular campaign that has continued for decades and has seen repeated efforts to block the base through mass actions of non-violent civil disobedience.

As socialists, we need to join with others in the effort to pressure the UK government to remove the Trident missiles from Faslane, as we seek to convince the peace movement to widen the focus of its actions to include a call for a nuclear weapons free Scotland and a demand that Scotland withdraw from NATO.

G8 SUMMIT AT ENNISKILLEN

The G8 summit was held  in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland, from June 17th – 18th. It is eight years since the G8 summit held at Gleneagles in July 2005. Emancipation & Liberation covered that summit quite extensively in issue no. 11 (see http://republicancommunist.org/blog/category/publications/emancipation-liberation/issue-11/). Little has changed.

The first article by John McAnulty of  Socialist Democracy (Ireland) shows the wider significance of the Enniskillen location chosen for this summit. This venue was chosen to help prop of the UK-Irish government Peace Process in the North and to maintain this as an international example of imperialist conflict resolution. As the second report, this time from eirigi highlights, massive amounts have been spent on security, with police and other security forces mobilised from across the UK. Significantly, police forces from across the UK, are now also being sent to help the PSNI manage the annual Orange Order sectarian Unionist/Loyalist supremacist marches. Legitimate attempts to protest  at Enniskillen and Belfast were clamped down on by the police, just as they were in Edinburgh and Auchterarder in 2005.

This is followed by two earlier articles. One from Socialist Democracy (Ireland) highlights the significance of the choice of venue for the British government, and Ireland’s current position, subjected both to EU and US/British imperialism. Another from eirigi, makes an overall political assessment of the two day event.
