Issue 163 of Scottish Socialist Voice (20.2.04) included an article on the dumping of truckloads of sewage at the village of Dunquandy, near Lesmahagow in Lanarkshire. This deal had been agreed by Scottish Coal and Terra Ecosystems (a subsidiary of Thames water) and the Labour-controlled South Lanarkshire Council. The article quite rightly pointed out the lack of any consultation with the local residents. It also highlighted the underlying class politics, when poor largely working class areas are selected for such dumping. Unfortunately, the headline chosen for this article pandered to anti-English chauvinism - English rubbish being dumped on Scotland. Would the rubbish be any more acceptable if it came from Edinburgh or Glasgow? Would SSV have printed a headline, Weegie rubbish being dumped in Lanarkshire! So why didn’t the headline simply state - Thames Water dump rubbish in Lanarkshire. This would have emphasised the link between a rapacious private company and a targeted working class area, without any chauvinist undertones.
